Little-Known Black History Fact (No. 103)
Sgt. William H. Carney, a leader in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers Regiment who charged on Fort Wagner in the Civil War, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery on this date, May 23rd in 1900. Carney became the first Black to receive this award.
